A Sale By Any Other Name

Friday June 19, 2009
There is a silly little debate that goes around my circle of friends about what you call any sale of old junk outside your home. For me, they are always yard sales, but others insist that they are called tag sales. Then there is the camp that calls them garage sales. And to top it all off there are also estate sales!

So many names for one thing…so what the heck is the difference? Well when it comes to yard, tag, and garage sales they are all the same animal. People sell their own possessions outdoors on their own property, whether it is in a yard, a garage, or on the sidewalk. Some people mark the prices with tags (hence the name “tag sale”, some do not and would rather take best offers.

Estate sales have a slightly different purpose, and are a total sale of most possessions in an estate due to a death or relocation as opposed to only selected items that a household wants to get rid of.

ll of these sales are likely to sell the same sorts of things, so for me, such nuances are irrelevant. As long as there are vintage wares and curiosities to be had, I am there!
